The good groom (Sat Patro)

A translation of  "Sat Patro" by Sukumar Ray.

Original:
Sat Patro
An English lit translation:
The good groom
Shunte pelam Posta giye
Tomar naki meyer biye.
Gongaram ke patro pele
Jante chao shey kemon chhele.

Mondo noy shey patro bhalo.
Rong jodio bejay kalo.
Tar upore mukher gothon
Onek ta thik pechar moton.

Bidde buddhi? Bolchhi Moshai
Dhonni chheler oddhoboshay.
Oonishtibar metrikete
Ghayel hoye thamlo sheshe.

Bishoy ashoy? Gorib bejay.
Koshte shishte din chole jay.
Manush to noy bhai gulo tar.
Ekta pagol ekta goyar.

Arek ti shey toiri chhele
Jaal kore note gechhen jaile.
Konishtho ti tobla bajay
Jatra dole paaach taka pay.

Gongaram to kebol bhoge
Piler jor r pandu roge.
Kintu tara uchcho ghor
Kongsho rajer bongshodhor.

Shaam Lahiri Bonogramer
Ki jani hoy Gongaramer.
Jahok ebar patro pele
Emon ki ar mondo chele.

In Posta, I heard it said
That your daughter's getting wed.
Gangaram is the groom to be-
Want to know how is he?

Not bad, he's a good fish,
Though he's rather darkish.
Then, the nose and jowl
Are like the night-owl.

Academic capacity?
Amazing tenacity!
At school finals, nineteen hits
Before he called it quits.

Money wise? Not so fine,
Barely over the poverty line.
His brothers aren't mature:
One's mad, the other a boor.

The third son's the smart one -
Forged money and went to prison
The youngest plays the drum
From village plays, earns a crumb.

Gangaram is often sick -
Feverish and anaemic.
But his lineage is superfine:
Kans's royal bloodline!

Shyam Lahiri of Bonogram
Is some kin of Gangaram.
Anyway, a Groom for your missy!
He ain't too bad, is he?

  1. Great attempt to match the rhythm
few of the rhyming literals may be have to be rethought so as to get the meaning more matching . eg.g
He ain't such a bad mark,

He ain't such a bad mark
